Bringing your kitten home: the first 48 hours

A gentle guide to the transition — what to prepare, what to expect on the first night, and how to make those first two days feel safe for your new kitten.

Bringing your kitten home: the first 48 hours

Bringing a kitten home is one of the most exciting days for any pawrent — and one of the biggest changes in your kitten's little life. The first 48 hours set the tone for everything that follows. Here's how we help our Petworks families make those first two days calm, safe, and full of gentle bonding.

Before you collect your kitten

A little preparation goes a long way. Before pickup, set aside one quiet room and get these essentials ready:

  • A cosy bed or a carrier lined with a soft, familiar blanket
  • Fresh water and the same food brand we feed at the cattery
  • A litter tray placed away from the food and water
  • A scratching post and a couple of simple toys

Keeping the same food avoids tummy upset. If you'd like to switch later, transition gradually over seven to ten days.

The first night

Your kitten has just left the only home they've known, so expect a little hiding, a few meows, and a cautious appetite — all completely normal. Sit with them often, speak softly, and let them explore the room at their own pace. Resist the urge to invite the whole family in at once; a quiet, low-traffic space helps them feel safe.

Tip: Place a worn t-shirt with your scent near their bed. Familiar smells settle a nervous kitten faster than anything else.

Day two and beyond

By the second day most kittens are visibly braver — playing, investigating, and seeking out your lap. Keep them in their one room until they're confidently eating, drinking, and using the litter tray. Over the next week or two you can slowly open up the rest of your home, one room at a time.

If you have other pets, keep them separated at first and swap scents using a soft cloth before any face-to-face introductions. Patience is everything — most kittens settle in fully within ten to fourteen days.

When to reach out

A quiet, slightly shy kitten is normal. But if your kitten refuses food or water for more than 48 hours, or shows signs of distress, contact us or your vet promptly. Every Petworks kitten comes with lifetime cattery support — so whether it's the first night or the first year, we're only a WhatsApp away at +65 9103 8055.

Welcome to the family. The best part of your story is just beginning.
